I seem to be doing an awful lot of wearables here on Mixed Media Artist these days!  Must be because the lazy hazy crazy dayz of summer are here, and I can't seem to peel myself off the swing on the front porch.  Tisk tisk...so LAZY!! Anyway, I bought this cute little (majorly cheap) dress at Walmart recently, but it was a bit dull for my tastes.  The stripes looked like they had been bleached.  I'm not sure if they were or not, but they gave me the idea to bleach them a bit more and paint them. I used some gel bleach to make the strips just a little whiter, and then laundered the dress to make sure all traces were removed.  You want to make sure that the garment you're painting is clean anyway, since you'll be heat-setting the paint, so this step does double-duty! Paint away and have fun.  I used full-bodied acrylics thinned with water.  I didn't even bother with fabric medium, because I wanted a thin watercolor look to the stripes, no...

This little project is so easy and fun that you probably don't even need my instructions!  I like to wear my hair up in the summer, a LOT of the time, so I started making these as a way to feature my ever-growing collection of buttons .  Start with these items: A hair elastic (preferably in some bright non-serious color) A fabric flower with a hole in the center (I made mine from a strip of old lace trim, following the instructions here on Beading Arts ) A shank button (large enough to make a nice flower center and not slip through the hole) A jump ring (not pictured, because I thought of it later!) Originally, I was going to sew the button to the elastic band through the hold in the center of the flower, but I decided to use a jump ring instead, because then I could change the button if I wanted to!  If you wanted to use a non-shank button, you could definitely sew it on, maybe using some embroidery floss in a fun contrasting color.  This post c...

In the most recent issue of Cloth Paper Scissors (July/August 2011), Teresa Stanton has a brilliant article called "Wearable Art Cuff" that I used as the inspiration for a new fabric cuff, steampunk style.  To build the basic cuff, you simply need strips of fabric and a sewing machine, or you could even do the stitching by hand if you'd rather!   I recommend you pick up a copy of the magazine for Teresa's clear instructions.  Below is a list of the various beads, buttons, and do-dads that I used for my cuff.  I make most of my bead embroidered fabric bracelets in a different fashion, and you can find the instructions for those at the link, but this time I mostly used Teresa's instructions, and really liked the way the edges are left free and ragged.    Materials   Watch parts, gears, buttons Gear charm (Earthenwood Studios) Seed beads Glass flowers 4 mm round accent beads Black Nymo O beading thread Embroidery thread Tools Pins ...

The Fourth of July seems like the perfect time to tell you about the odyssey that my daughter and husband just enjoyed together: they drove from our home just outside of Boston to the site of Dani's new job in Portland Oregon!  Yup - from sea to shining sea, minus about 20 miles ;-) A cart that Dani created for the play The Merchant of Venice with some actors standing in the way!
