Embellished turtle fabrics - part two

Last week I showed you the turtle stencil that I made , and how I ended up using the positive cutting rather than the negative to make some small fabric panels.  Today I want to share the beaded embellishments with you.  I still don't know what I'm going to do with these panels, but I really like how they've turned out so far! Iron shirtweight fusible interfacing to the back of each panel before beginning to stitch.  I added three-strand embroidery (running stitch, fly stitch) and individually stitched seed beads and tube beads.  Also a couple of buttons, as you can see.  Part one Part two Copyright 2012 Cyndi Lavin. Turtle stencils - part one

Another thing I got a bit obsessed by during our vacation to Hawai'i besides lava was the image of the sea turtle.  Especially after I saw one just off the coast!  That's him (her?) above.  Not a great picture, but I couldn't exactly wait around for the sun to get into the right position :-) There are very old petroglyphs of the turtle on Hawai'i, and you'll find the image used frequently in fabric design and other arts.  So I decided to draw my own and do some little fabric panels using him.  I took some liberties...there are no spirals on the original petroglyphs. Acrylics: Green gold , Sap green Walnut Ink : Eucalyptus 1. Sponge on acrylics. 2. Mist with water to encourage running. 3. Let dry. 4. Spray walnut ink lightly over stencils. 5. Let dry. Next week: embellishments! This post contains affiliate links Copyright 2012 Cyndi Lavin. All rights reserved. Not to be reprinted, resold, or redistributed for profit. M

Book review and projects: Crochet Garden

Last month, I won a copy of Suzann Thompson's delightful new book Crochet Garden , and I must say it arrived just in time.  Just in time for a heat wave, that is!  I had remarked in my comment that I love doing small projects in the summertime, ones that don't sit heavily on my lap (I've actually got a half-completed quilt set aside that I'll need to share with you later because I can't stand having it on me while I work!).  And lucky me, I won and received a Crochet Garden mere days before the heat wave struck. This is a totally fabulous book.  Dozens of flowers are joined by leaves, stems, small critters, and ideas for projects that will use your new creations.  You need to know, though, that there are no basic instructions for stitches in this book.  I think it's way easy enough to find them elsewhere, and Suzann says that she skipped this part so there would be more room for actual flowers.    The first thing I did was gallop through, oooing and aww

For those who will be wondering...no, I would never actually do this!

Lava quilt - part three

Pahoehoe , 2012 Yay!  After so many starts, stops, and missteps, my quilt finally began to come together more quickly.  Just worrying about one step at a time seemed to be the answer for this project.  Most of the time, I like to know several steps down the road, or even all of them, but it just didn't work like that this time.  I guess it's a lesson for me...creativity doesn't always follow a plan ;-) Anyway, I used embroidery floss to match the complementary accent color, and stitched each lava printout to the background fabric that I had painted.  I love the way the floss color pulls out the color in both the background and in the shadows of the lava images where I added it. The painted fabric showed through the thin cotton printouts ever so slightly, so after I'd stitched them in place, I flipped the piece and cut the background fabric out from behind the printouts. There is no sense in having cut out the background fabric just to add anoth
