Book review and giveaway: Making Handmade Books

Alisa Golden has always been one of my favorite teachers when it comes to book arts. She explains the steps very clearly, shows you lots of variations on a theme, and liberally scatters pictures of beautiful examples of handmade books, both her own and others'.   Her current book, Making Handmade Books , was originally published as two separate books in 1998 and 2001: Creating Handmade Books and Unique Handmade Books .  If you have these volumes, you might want to pass on this one, although it's got some beautiful new artwork in it and quotes by many new book artists. I am extremely thankful to Lark Publications for sending me an extra copy of this fabulous book so that I can offer it to you all as a giveaway.  You're gonna love it!  There are over 100 bindings and other book techniques covered, starting with the simplest folded books (like the mock-ups I showed you on Monday), and moving through the most complicated of the sewn forms.  Alisa also ...

Folded book mock-ups

I have had the good fortune to receive a wonderful new book from Lark Publications recently called Making Handmade Books .  It's by one of my favorite book artist-teachers, Alisa Golden , and you'll want to stay tuned, because I've got a copy to GIVE AWAY starting on Wednesday! In the meantime, I've been working my way through some of the easier forms, messing about with her samples of folded book forms.  All that is needed for these mock-ups are the following tools and materials: Thin copy paper X-acto knife Bone folder Pen Cutting mat Clear ruler  See the one in the front?  It's a really clever tunnel book which opens in such a way that the first few pages form a platform for the tunnel.  There's an accordion book in the background, along with an X book, an ox-plow form, and several other structures. Why bother to do these little mock-ups?  Several reasons.  First, you can make sure that the instructions are clear to you so you don't w...

Photo artist: Paul Triolo

Holy Wars Artist: Paul Triolo Cycle Art book Originally from my hometown, cyclist Paul Triolo creates amazing photo art...with his iPhone!  Paul has moved to (slightly) warmer climes, and I hope that allows him to have an even longer cycling season each year.    Autumnal Haiku Paul now lives in Rockville Maryland and has been an avid road cyclist for the past decade. He has a degree in electrical engineering and is a bit of a geek, building his own computers, administering home and business networks, and is an early adopter, who believes that the one with the most gadgets wins. Paul discovered somewhat by chance an unexpected power within the iPhone on a long bicycle ride early in 2009. A chance encounter with blooming dandelions stopped a long ride, and he took a photo of them with his new iPhone. Later, as he played with the photo in a quite setting, using a number of image editing apps, he realized he had discovered a new genre, which he dubbed “Cycle...

Embroidered floral necklace

A few weeks ago, I showed you some floral embroidery that I was working on.  I'm happy to say that the piece is finished and now I just have to wait for spring to arrive in order to wear it!  Within the next few weeks I'll be posting a tutorial on Beading Arts which goes into more detail on the steps to make a necklace like this.  For now, I just wanted to share a few shots with you.  Copyright 2011 Cyndi Lavin.
