Guatemala - day five

We're just on the verge of the beginning of the rainy season On Wednesday morning, we went into town with Micah to drop off Yelsi for her class, take care of some banking, buy some wood for one of Dave's projects, and go to the produce market for the next two dinners.  While Mike and Micah went after the wood, I stayed in the van to guard the money.  We were parked right by one of the paths that the kids take to go back and forth to school, and I watched a bunch of them strolling down the street with their uniforms and backpacks.  Although the backpacks had shoulder straps, they were more likely to end up being carried on the kids' heads!  Micah told me later that the younger kids go to school in the early morning until around noon and then the older ones go in the afternoon until around 6 pm.   The women mostly wear their traditional dress:  a corte (skirt), huipil (embroidered blouse), and faja (sash)  Then men mostly wear jeans   ...

Guatemala - day four

By Tuesday, our fourth day in Guatemala, Mike and I needed to catch up on sleep and take it a little bit easier.  After all, we are quite a bit older than the "kids" that are currently running the home!   Katherine and Lizzie Nate, Lizzie, and Katherine joined us after breakfast at the hotel, and hung out for the morning, using the beautiful pool and hot tub with the full blessings of the owner of the Posada .  I enjoyed having an uninterrupted time to talk with Nate about their plans for when they return to the States.  We wrapped it all up and headed out to the house just in time to help with lunch preparations.   Nate, Mike, Katherine, and Lizzie After lunch, most of the kids still had school work to do, so I spent the early afternoon reading books to Rosa and Katherine while Mike did everyone the huge favor of sharpening all the knives in the kitchen.  Thank you thank you...what a difference!  By around 3:00 pm, the kids began to finish the...

Book review: Flavor for Mixed Media

This is a cute book, but not full of "cute art".  The cute part is that Mary Beth Shaw has filled Flavor for Mixed Media with just that...flavors.  She feels that all art forms are interconnected, even food, and most of her guest artists seem to agree, to the point that they are even willing to share some of their own personal favorite recipes!  Well, you probably know that I'm going to agree with that.  I don't just write Real Food Fast! for my health, after all!  Art and food, what could possibly be a more logical pairing?  That doesn't mean that the art is about food though.  No, Mary Beth has tapped artists with a wide variety of styles to serve as inspiration in her book.  She is very generous with her praise of them and points out how each has inspired some aspect of her own work.  The technique portion of her books is divided into sections called color, texture, layers, flavors, and combinations.  The book is a vi...

Book review: 500 Raku

I know nothing about raku, but (as they say) I know what I like when I see it.  And I like raku.  Pretty much all of it.  Until I saw this new Lark Book, 500 Raku , I had no idea the variety of looks that raku artists were achieving.  Naked raku, sprayed glazes, alcohol reductions, ferric chloride, underglazed, wheel-thrown, press-molded...all new terms if you're not familiar with the world of ceramics.  And such beautiful beautiful stuff! This is an inspiration book.  It does not explain how to do it, or even exactly what raku is , but allows you to glory in the variety of work being done today that both honors tradition and pushes boundaries.  I now know that raku dates back to the late 16th century in Japan.  And I know that I really like it! How can I pick favorites among so much fabulous work?  I really can't, but Jana Diedrich's fish enchanted me so much I have to share them with you.  You can see lots of her creatio...

Guatemala - day three

Looking up from the waterfront On Monday morning, we woke up a bit early again and had a few hours to roam around the hotel grounds and check things out before Nate and the gang were coming to get us for the day.  Yelsi was taking a keyboarding class in town (Santiago), so someone was driving her in each day, making it convenient to pick us up and thus also saving us from sunburns!   Sunlight reaches the distant village on the other side of the lake These funny black birds hopped around on the floating algae   Our cabin Micah showed up with Yelsi, Nate, Lizzie, and Katherine, and we squeezed in too.  There are a number of errands that needed to be done, including dropping off the broken TV, picking up some gallons of water to tide us over until the water filter is fixed, gas to power the generator since the power has been out throughout all of Tzanchaj overnight and today, and some electrical parts to hopefully fix the broken dishwasher.  When...
