Abstracting from Nature class - part one

Abstracting From Nature was the name of the class that I took with Jane Sassaman, and I highly recommend it for anyone who'd like to try their hand at a non-intimidating design class. Jane taught us how to see organic forms in a new way - new to me at any rate - breaking objects down into the traits elements that make them most recognizable as what they are. After spending almost a full day sketching and refining, I was ready to start to transfer some of my designs to fabric.

I was able to just get started on sewing near the end of the day. I'm not much of a machine quilter or piecer, so I was able to start by hand in class. Yes, I know that piecing and applique go much more quickly with a machine, but I just love doing it by hand. I will probably end up doing some quilting by machine, but I haven't really decided yet.

It's actually fun drawing once you started, don't you think? I have a tendency to overdo my drawings so to simplify it like this is so great, and it looks really nice. Love your red flower/fruitslice ;) Hugs

I was very pleasantly surprised by how much I enjoyed the process of breaking it down like this. I've rarely enjoyed drawing before, because I have such a hard time with making the line go where it's supposed to. This was a lot of fun though!
