Fractured photographs

I found my notes on how I made the fractured photographs! I'm so happy, because I'd really like to do some more, but it's been soooo long! It turns out it's not too difficult, but I had definitely forgotten about a few of the fine points that make it smoother. All these steps are done in Photoshop . 1. Make a copy of your background image and colorize it using the hue and saturation sliders. 2. Select sections with the polygon lasso tool, and use Ctrl-J to place each on its own layer. 3. Shift the color slightly and or move the selection slightly for each layer. 4. Turn off all but one layer at a time. Select the layer, choose inverse, feather about 50 pixels, and hit the delete key. Add a drop shadow effect to each. 5. Go back and adjust the opacity for each layer so that overlapping layers will show through. Copyright 2009 Cyndi Lavin. Our town hall

Ayer Town Hall I found this little digital piece that I did over four years ago on a gorgeous spring day, and I started to wonder what else could be done with the technique. I think I'll mess around with it over the next few days and see what pops out. The best I can remember is that I "cut" the image into selections, placing each of them on their own layer in Photoshop . Each was then desaturated to a certain extent and colorized, and then shifted slightly. I'm going to have to look and see if I took better notes than that...I sure hope so! If I can figure it out, I'll write up some better instructions ;-) Technorati Tags: mixed media , collage , assemblage , digital art , photography , altered books , art journals

Finished tomato quilt

After I completed all the hand stitching, using embroidery thread to blanket stitch the pieces to the background fabric, I decided to cut it out in the shape of a tomato cross-section. This felt like a better "fit" to me, staying with the shape that dominated the quilt rather than leaving it square or rectangular. Next, the quilt needed some filler, so I stitched a few clusters of the large purple seed beads (the same ones that I used for seeds in the largest tomato) all around the quilt. I made a traditional "quilt sandwich" with the top, thin cotton batting, and a backing. Both the batting and the backing were cut bigger than the top. I quilted by machine, doing a very simple outline around the largest shapes. Next, I cut the edges even and ran a zig zag stitch around the outside several times through all the layers. The final step was to add hand sewn blanket stitch all around the outside, picking up a large green seed bead with each stitch. It'

I'm sure that some folks would find the stitching down phase of this quilt project way too tedious, but I love the look of hand work, and I'm not really in any kind of hurry anyway! Book review & giveaway: The Art of Fabric Collage

The Art of Fabric Collage by Rosemary Eichorn ***Free Stuff Alert***Free Stuff Alert*** Beautiful to look at, and just stuffed full of wonderful ideas, designs, and instructions! The Art of Fabric Collage is subtitled "An easy introduction to creative sewing". I'm not 100% sure about the "easy" part, but the instructions are so clear and complete, that I definitely believe that a beginner sewer with determination will get a lot out of this book. As for intermediate or better sewers, I think this book has the potential to open your eyes to new ways of using your machine. Rosemary steps you through the process of adding all kinds of interesting fabrics to a background. Once this piece is washed and dried, the edges become softened and interesting, and the new fabric can be used in all kinds of creations. Here's the description from the publisher: Fabric collage, which was developed by author Rosemary Eichorn, is an inspiring quilting method that allows cr

Abstracting from Nature class - part two

On the second day in Jane Sassaman's class, Abstracting From Nature , I was able to make choices about how my quilt was going to be laid out. We had to figure out the order in which different pieces would be stitched down. At first, I was planning on just using one tomato, but my eye wants to see the balance of a great triangle, so I plan to add two more. Their spot is just being held by the red fabric below. Abstracting from Nature class - part one

Abstracting From Nature was the name of the class that I took with Jane Sassaman , and I highly recommend it for anyone who'd like to try their hand at a non-intimidating design class. Jane taught us how to see organic forms in a new way - new to me at any rate - breaking objects down into the traits elements that make them most recognizable as what they are. After spending almost a full day sketching and refining, I was ready to start to transfer some of my designs to fabric. I was able to just get started on sewing near the end of the day. I'm not much of a machine quilter or piecer, so I was able to start by hand in class. Yes, I know that piecing and applique go much more quickly with a machine, but I just love doing it by hand. I will probably end up doing some quilting by machine, but I haven't really decided yet. Part One Part Two Copyright 2009 Cyndi Lavin. Not to be reprinted, resold, or redistributed for profit. Class with the fabulous Jane Sassaman

I'm so fortunate to live near enough to Lowell Massachusetts that I can drive up and take classes there during the annual Lowell Quilt Festival . This year, my friend Debbie and I decided to take the two day class being offered by Jane Sassaman . I've admired Jane's work for years, and although her style is totally different from mine, I was eager to take the class Abstracting From Nature . Or maybe it's because her style is so totally different from mine. What's the point of learning something you already know? This line caught my eye in the class description: "This class is especially beneficial for the drawing impaired and the tragically literal." Well, that fits me and Debbie to a tee: I'm drawing impaired and Debbie is tragically literal. And we struggled with these shortcomings throughout the class! Jane's gorgeous quilts But a miracle happened. By the end of the first day, I realized that I had been drawing pretty much all day long ,
