Another selenium print

Angel

On my recent trip to Virginia, I spent a fair amount of time shooting pictures in the graveyards there. Call me morbid if you will, the statues in the Civil War era and Victorian era cemetaries are just beautiful.

Fossil fish quilts

Fossil fish quilts

Curly, Moe, Larry, and Shad came from the Smithsonian Institute, the natural history museum to be exact! When we were visiting earlier this month, I took quite a few shots of different fossils. These guys got finished up over the weekend.

Roots

Roots

While on vacation, I spent some time taking shots of the gigantic twisted and gnarled roots of the arborvitae trees. Mostly we see these as bushes, but many of the ones in this park in Virginia were older than the nation itself. Very very cool.

Fish skeletons

It may seem like I haven't made any progress on my new little fish quilts. The thing is, I'm doing a series of four, and doing them all at the same time!

Finally I've got prints on vellum that I'm happy with ~ it took some doing to get just the right look. And the quilt sandwiches are all ready, with one short end open so that I can easily add all the embellishments (you can see the raw edge on the right side). Each fish and each quilt is different, but they all look good together as a series. Maybe this weekend I'll be able to start the hand-stitching :-)

Enchant them...

Kathy Sierra posted a wonderful piece on
enchanting your users. We all know the moment of frustration that sets in when something rises up and kicks us out of our flow state...whether we're working, playing, praying ~ it matters not. What matters is how incredibly pissed off we feel in that moment.

Now Kathy writes for computer geeks mostly, so what does that have to do with art geeks? Well, let's think about it...is there any element of your creation that causes people to be jarred out of the flow of appreciation? A clasp that keeps unclasping? An orange splotch where no orange splotch should dare to be? Hmmm...think about it a bit, and read her excellent post. Even better, subscribe to her excellent blog!

Vacations and skeletons

Hi, I'm back from vacay. It wasn't the slightest bit relaxing, but I came home with hundreds of pictures for source material ~ both for my digital photography and collage work and for beading! Mike and Dani and I flew into Washington DC, and then rented a car to drive down to visit Mike's parents in southern VA a couple days later.

We were able to go to the Hirshorn Gallery in the morning, the Renwick Gallery in early afternoon, and then hit the Museum of Natural Science late afternoon after an energizing lunch at the Hard Rock Cafe. I was able to get some pretty good shots in the last museum, even without flash.

Since I've gotten back, I've been pretty absorbed in working on a couple of digital series. Beads have been on the back burner, but I've got a couple ideas that are surfacing for the near future. I'm working on a series of small art quilts that use the fish fossils that I shot. I'm sure the quilts will use beads somewhere :-)

Interactive website

I'm back...did you miss me? Don't answer that.

You can make your own version of this wonderful Einstein picture by visiting this site. By the way, Mike is my husband, and he's a particle physicist and theorist. Maybe he's not exactly an Einstein, but as far as I'm concerned, he's even better!

OK, OK, just one more thing...

Check out the wonderful new entries at Worth1000! This one is my favorite in "Urban Evolution"...isn't it a riot?

TTFN!

Ta ta for now! I'm taking a week-long break from my computer to see what it's possible to accomplish without the cyber-distraction. See you soon :-)
